Who will you be when history calls?

Trevor Noah recently released a Netflix special in which he said two things that spoke deeply to me.

Who will you be when history calls?” and “Just because big things are happening does not mean small things stop.”

I’ve been away for several months because the enormity of the attack on our freedoms by members of our own government sent me into a spiral of depression that I could not see out a way out of. I devoted decades of my life to our legal system and seeing it torn apart broke something in me.

But I don’t want to be someone who didn’t fight when history called. I don’t want to give up. I want to continue to find ways to help, to heal, and to resist. So, I am coming back.

I’m also going to advocate a bit for balance as we move into the next phase of this fight. We have to find joy where we can and celebrate what we can while we are under this heavy dark cloud. We can’t let it blot out all the light.

Noah talked about stories soldiers shared about trench warfare, singing back and forth across no man’s land with enemy soldiers, making games to pass the nights, finding their joy despite the rotting feet, hunger, and imminent death. He said they remembered why they were fighting and it is what helped them get through.

It’s not enough to fight, we also have to live.

So I am going to start sharing ways we can resist here on the news page of Liberties Ladies, but I am going to make a tag for good news too. Let’s bring the light into the fight so we can carry on.

In other news, let’s take a look at this and consider partcipating:

Rise Up, Sing Out! Livestream Parties
Rise Up, Sing Out is a nationwide day of action and celebration on June 14, bringing communities together to honor the country we love on the anniversary of No Kings and Flag Day. Through local gatherings, music, art, and a national livestream concert, participants will celebrate First Amendment freedoms and build the relationships that power long-term organizing.

You can be part of this celebration by hosting an in-person party to livestream the Rise Up, Sing Out concert in your community! This celebratory event is an opportunity to deepen relationships within your group, recruit new members, and build momentum for the critical work ahead.

Whether you’re hosting 5 people in your living room or 500 in a community center, your event matters. Together, we’re building the long-term collective power necessary to protect our communities and send a clear message: In this country, we have no kings.

To learn more about hosting, check out the Rise Up, Sing Out host toolkit. Next, register your event on Mobilize. And if you need support with registering your event, check out this event registration guide. Indivisible groups are eligible for reimbursement of up to $500 for their party supplies. Learn more and submit for reimbursement here.
